Great career opportunities, plus lots of benefits and discounts with other corporations. Also the insurance is really good and very worth it to work here.

I worked at H E B as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I highly recommend avoidance of this career opportunity

    Cons

During my employment within this company I was subject to suffer the HR departments promotion of petty and disruptive meetings. They allowed new staff and lack luster performers to carry forth a meeting that promotes a hostile and negative work environment. Staff at this meeting were encouraged by HR to describe their hatred and disdain for our current manager. They dissolved any resemblance of a team environment and enforced the idea that Managers should fear training and building staff to their full potential. If you are searching for employment within this company as a department manager I highly encourage you to stay away. The store management act volitiley searching to severely punish any resemblance of "failure" in department management. If an associate "fails" in their eyes they will remove all department management from their alotted break and berate them in front of customers, peers, and associates for minor department inadaquacies and easily resolved issues. I feel that every customer deserves a great shopping experience. And that staff deserve a great and uplifting training experience to provide their customers with the best and most positive service possible. But the store management, and HR department will disrupt your ability to train, build and guide. If you are, at all, capable of removing yourself from candidacy of a management position within this company, please do. You will only live in a more uplifting and positive environment

    Advice to Management

If at all possible reevaluate your HR policies and procedures. Make sure that your HR staff is adequately trained in handling disgruntled or argumentative staff, and please evaluate performance more carefully before your involvement becomes a hostile and negative experience. The staff within a department are not professional performance evaluators. Most of the staff that is employed are people without specialization or degree. Hr should be able to evaluate a situation by reviewing key performance indicators of a business and its operations. They should be trained in every aspect of the business so they can handle and be expected to handle things in an encouraging and professional way. Store management should be trained in EVERY aspect of store performance, hr evaluations, and be a role model of store performance. Allowing bullying, hostility and negativity within store management only enforces a high turn over rate of staff. Store Managers need to remember every single aspect has the capability to be fixed and remedied in a positive and encouraging way. They are the teachers and educators of your business. They are what promotes you as a great store to work for. Allowing staff that do not lead positively is severely disruptive to staff and customer experience. Every business has its opportunity for building a better future, HEB seeks to be a leader in how they treat their employees, its what the owner has striven for over the past several decades. Its difficult to see a stores HR department and management being improperly trained, or deliberately ignoring practices and procedures that the owner and builder has worked so hard to achieve and press upon.
