I worked at HNTB full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

A very strong sales approach and understanding of key clients. Office accommodations and networking/communication tools were high quality. Teams were collaborative.

Cons

A revolving door of leadership and structure. I had 9 supervisor changes in 13 years. It is hard to gain traction when constantly reinventing or restructuring departments, divisions, and subsidiaries. Recent years brought dramatic swings in layoffs and direction was often unclear.

Advice to Management

Find a course and stay on it.

I worked at HNTB (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company on the corporate level with average salaries and benefits. Large offices often acquire excellent projects and are respected by their clients. Most engineers are very competent.

    Cons

Small offices suffer from poor management and inexperienced staff, frequently resulting in a shortage of work. Things such as overtime, training, paid time off and professional memberships are often denied. No end of the year bonuses. Cliques and inappropriate use of time and work ethic are common. Opportunities are only available for certain individuals, and not everyone is evaluated by the same standards. Employee evaluations are focused on what benefits the company and not much on developing the employees. Severe decline in company stock last year.

    Advice to Management

Many in leadership positions are great at managing projects, but not very good at managing people. Office-level management is often disconnected from the staff. More focus needs to be placed on working as a team, instead of every person for themselves.

    Pros

    Compensation package is not bad.

    Cons

Management do not seem to care about the development of their employees. Favoritism is pretty apparent. Managers are not good people managers.

    Advice to Management

People that are in the position of managing people should want to do it. Otherwise, they should just manage projects.
