No opinion of CEO

Pros

-High level of integrity/culture is to do the right thing
-People generally cooperative and good to work with
-Good benefits and opportunities to travel globally

Cons

-Poor project management discipline
-Poor BU strategy
-Terrible base pay but bonuses can compensate

Advice to Management

-Develop strong project management disciplines and methodologies in CoE not just lift and shift
- Run OneHSBC from a proposition and strategy viewpoint as well as process and IT
-Compensate people now to prevent competitors picking off talent as market picking back up
-Develop stronger local BU strategy functions

    Pros

Benefits and work/life balance are pretty good. If you are in a good department with growth, lots of opportunities.

    Cons

I'm stuck in a group that has gone through several reorgs in the last 24 months and career growth is in neutral or reverse. Posting within the company is difficult at times.

    Advice to Management

Limit the use of consultants when you are laying off qualified employees!!!

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

    - Benefits package is great.
    - Lots of bright and friendly people in the lower level.
    - Opportunity to work with people from different ethnic and cultural background.
    - Opportunity to relocate to other countries.

    Cons

    - Highly bureaucratic culture.
    - There are more people talking than people working.
    - Employees are treated as resources not human. You are expected to do whatever you are told, don't ask why.
    - Long hours but don't expect any overtime pay.
    - Performance and pay are not correlated. Annual performance evaluation are pointless and insincere.
    - Salary is below market average. Large chunk of bonus goes to senior management.
    - Loads of politics.
    - There is no long term vision and strategy from senior management. Direction changes every couple months.
    - Management tends to set unrealistic goals, creating a very stressful working environment.
    - More and more jobs are being transferred to developing countries.
    - Limited career advancement opportunity.
    - Most senior positions are filled by managers seconded from other countries. These positions are only 2 years in length, hence these managers won't bother with developing people.
    - One can basically find all the bad examples and general problems discussed in an Organization Behavior textbook right here in HSBC.

    Advice to Management

    - Set realistic goal and then inspire and motivate your employees to achieve it.
    - Respect your employee.
    - Lower the ridiculous compensation of senior management.
    - Promote and terminate the correct people based on their results.
    - Be more transparent and less hierarchical.

With the job market picking up again, many people will start leaving if nothing gets improved.
