I worked at Habitat for Humanity full-time (More than a year)

Pros

On the job experience, learning all aspects of retail,product knowledge

Cons

Some customers are rude and sometimes staff flutuates to fewer than 5 at times.

Advice to Management

Listen to what some of your managers' suggestions who have over 20 yrs in retail at big box stores have to say. Have cash assistance volunteers orientation more intense before sending to stores.

    got plenty of raises, small office, felt like family. Lots of support from main office.

    Pros

    Endless room for growth, both personally and professionally.
    Unique opportunity to learn a wide-range of skills (public relations, grant writing, volunteer recruitment/management, government relations, donor cultivation)
    Access to individuals who share a passion to make a difference in the community.

    Cons

    Long hours and a lack of resources (limited staff, ever-increasing needs within the community) quickly lead to burnout.
    Board of Directors can be challenging if the organization does not have a clear vision for the future.

    Advice to Management

    In order to attract the talented and committed individuals that the nonprofit sector needs to succeed, invest in your staff (competitive salaries, benefits, etc.).
