I have been working at Halloween City part-time

    Pros

Fellow employees were easy to work with and helpful

    Cons

I, and other employees were not paid on time. The first week employees worked before official store opening, time records were not submitted correctly to payroll. Management was not helpful in remedying issue. Some employees have still not been paid though management acknowledges the hours the employees were not paid. Horrible job. Upper management doesn't understand how store is run so store managers are poorly prepared for the actual job. The theoretical expectation of how a store should be run is not consistent with how it actually goes down. The store was constantly a mess despite employees working hard on recovery due to high traffic and lack of company wanting to hire enough people to actually keep store running smoothly.

    Advice to Management

Hire more employees for high risk stores that are susceptible to shoplifting, pay employees on time or work pleasantly with those that have issues. HR was very rude an uncaring to employee issues. Learn how store works from the experience of current employees and store managers. The expectations of upper management are not reasonable with actual experiences of the workers doing the job. Maybe if morale was better among employees and they were respected company could run better.

I worked at Halloween City full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Halloween can be fun, with the right management staff (this includes RM, DM, & GM) this can be a wonderful experience. Also getting recalled year after year can look good on a resume in this economy. Pay is good if you are upper management.

    Cons

Poor pay if you are a sales associate, assistant manager or executive assistant manager. Having your cut hours to be able to "Bank" them to use later to close the store. District and Regional managers minimizing opening and closing staff to save money during build outs and break downs. Only using management for build outs and breakdowns i.e. having 4 or 5 middle aged women or 4 or 5 people in their early 60's to unload a truck, build the shelving and walls in addition to repricing merchandise in a 10 hour day. Poor choices for Regional and Distict Managers. Giving the Managers increased paperwork in the form of reports that they do not have time to actually run the store. LAZY District managers that dictate by text or e-mail. District Managers that choose favorites and subsequently damage other stores. Corporate cutting corners causing staffers time and money. Cutbacks that cause salary employees to work 60 to 80 hours a week. When you do the math on it store managers make less an hour than the associates. Stores are told that there are "no returns", customers are given the opportunity to try on costumes, check strings of lights etc before making their purchaes so that does give the consumer some wiggle room to return an item, but customers will take it out of context to use it for every situation. When reported to higher management they need to back up the decision maker and not give into the customer. Not working hands on in a store upper management does not see the "snow ball" effect they enable. Treating employees like they are idiots, especially returning employees.

    Advice to Management

Be careful with whom you place in positions of Regional and District Managers. When you hire someone from a competitor that was fired, THERE WAS A REASON WHY THEY WERE FIRED! Avoid managers who think they are gods. Restructore and revise. I would start from the ground up. You guys are cutting the wrong corners, becoming too political and corporate. You have gems hidden in corners of your company, i.e: store managers, assistant managers. Contact them to help. because of your choices for my RM and DM I will not be returning for the 2013 season and I ran one of your highest yieldiig stores for 3 years.
