I worked at Hancock Fabrics part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Other employees are okay to get to know. Other than that, not much.

Cons

Store was in poor repair and dirty
Poorly managed
Employees overworked and under paid
No breaks
Not enough hours

Advice to Management

House your stores in decent buildings. Have a custodian do the cleaning, not the overworked sales associates. Stop understaffing. Let the manager have more than one assistant. There is way too much work for the amount of employees you allow. Stop expecting the sales associates to sell your promotional items without paying them a commission. Offer better pay, you might keep more long-term employees that way. Give employees reasonable breaks. No one should be expected to go without eating for a whole shift.

    Pros

#1 has to be the customers. They are patient and sophisticated in their choices. They are willing to wait for what is good. As long as they are treated respectfully they make the job worth having.
#2 The discount, as a "crafter" this can make a difference.
#3 the Coworkers you get to work with, not for, are some of the most amazing women who have lived amazing lives. Some are young some are old but they all have one thing in common, loyalty and dedication to Hancock Fabrics and their customers.

    Cons

#1 Degradation and dehumanization of minorities and people of color by management.
#2 Instability in scheduling and training
#3 Broken commitments to corporate training policies at the local and district level
#4 A sickening practice of putting people into positions that they are not trained for and then firing them for not doing the job appropriately
#5 Refusal of Upper management to enforce the same rules on store management as they do on associates and stock persons
#6 No discount on machinery for employees

    Advice to Management

Loss prevention is a quick acting entity inside any company, but within Hancock fabrics this department seems to be at the beck and call of the district managers. Either they are deciding to enforce loss prevention policies on certain demographics or they are doing so at the guidance of the DMs. If this is so there is a huge problem with this due to the fact that DMs are also managers and have access to inventory and have the opportunity to compromise this position. They can and have in the recent past selected employees to be terminated for loss prevention and openly excused their white counterparts for the same act, calling in a very minor detail due to the cost of the items.
Please take a look at who you place at the heads of your fleets ships. I have been a customer of this company for more than 18 years and an employee for less than two months. I seriously regret taking this job and learning about all the serious issues that are happening within this company and how they will flow over to your customers if it is not addressed. This company has been so highly regarded for the way they treat their customers. It is sad that they treat the very people who have built this customer loyalty with such disdain and disrespect.

There is an example I will give without naming names. A loyal employee of more than 19 years purchased discontinued stock. Purchased it!! She was asked to resign or be fired by her DM almost immediately. She was a black assistant manager who in the company's time of need performed the manager position and ran the store for the 9 months they were without a manager. She was constantly praised for her dedication to her customers, knowledge of products, and dedication to the Brand that Hancock has become.
About one year later a DM in training and current store manager herself was observed stealing parts from a discontinued items, this was reported to the DM and said that it wasnt really stealing. She stated the cost of the item as prove that it was not important. There are two differences in the scenarios; 1st employee was African American while the 2nd was white, the 1st employee did not steal the items while employee #2 did, lastly the value of the items were different of the 3 items that employee #2 stole, one of them had a current market value of about $100, while employee #1 was buying discontinued buttons and fabric not equaling $100.

I hope you take the opportunity to enjoy the type of cohesion that equal and fair treatment can create within a company. If you dont take this opportunity you will at one point suffer losses within this company's most important area, Store Operations
