Pros

Great mission and generally cutting-edge work in the HIV/AIDS and homeless health care fields. Entry-level and program positions seem satisfied with the support and feedback from senior management.

Cons

A lot of internal issues at the moment, but senior management has traditionally been less than helpful for middle-level staff and management. A lot of problems and confusion in the administration. Find it a pretty uninspiring work environment with virtually no room for growth and very very little structure and support from above. Beware of office politics here!!

Advice to Management

Please improve your reporting structure and figure out how you can better address the day to day issues that your staff faces. Management trainings do little good if you aren't listening to the needs of those you are managing.

I have been working at Harlem United Community Aids Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some managers at Harlem United who are very smart, innovative, and effective leaders. Your experience can vary based on who your supervisor is.

    Cons

Harlem United relies too heavily on data collection, which hinders front line staff from providing effective interventions. Front line staff are also blamed for outcomes beyond their control. While Harlem United attracts a great staff, its employee retention is very low. This may be due to its poor allocation of resources that promotes ineffective managers while stymies those that effect change. Front line staff and lower management are often expected to shoulder the workload of those who leave. There are no opportunities for salary growth, further training, or learning opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunities for staff to grow in abilities, training, and salary. Provide opportunities for front line staff to evaluate and provide feedback regarding managers.
