I worked at Harley-Davidson full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Harley Davidson was a great company to work at. Their mission statement was something you identified with and wanted to contribute to. They also valued employees as their greatest assets. Benefits are also better than industry standards.

Cons

The fun is not there anymore.

Advice to Management

Management has lost sight of what's important. Bottom line should not blur the long term vision and don't lose focus of the things that have made this company great and great to work for.

I worked at Harley-Davidson as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Culture change is leading to more lean manufacturing practices which they have tried to educate all employees on.

Strong emphasis on safety in the workplace -- "leave the same way you came in".

Great hardworking and dedicated people that believe in the brand.

Great place to use as a stepping stone to move forward (and elsewhere) in your career.

Culture change is leading to more involvement from those on the assembly floor.

    Cons

Less and less regard for benefits to the people on the floor -- union/corporate relations are unfavorable.

Turnover is leading to added responsibility (and late hours) to those in permanent positions without an increase in pay.

No defined leaders; decisions take forever to be made because roles are muddied by turnover and by "pointing fingers" at who should be responsible.

    Not a mentoring environment.

    Behind the times on technology.

    Advice to Management

Realize when talented people are front of you. Likewise, stop recruiting those who are clearly incompetent at their job after the first couple of months. Also, stop passing the buck on making crucial decisions that affect business in the immediate or near future. Granted the culture change will help this, but only time will tell.

    I worked at Harley-Davidson full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Being a part of an "All American" brand and bringing our product to our customers.

    Cons

Too much focus on budget and cutting cost, with little thought in regards to employee's needs.

    Advice to Management

Remember that a good, hard working, devoted, and strong workforce are hard to find in this economy and you should work to preserve it, not let it go.
