Current Employee - Systems Engineer in Lynchburg, VA
Disapproves of CEO

Pros

- Room for Advancement
- Professional Atmosphere
- Good Salary / Benefits

Cons

- System Engineers travel alot, and when they travel they typically work OT, which is fine.
- - - Problem with this is that after working several weeks straight on the road and OT, you don't get little praise for the time you've put in.

- Design engineers were told they had to put in OT (50 hours/ week) and got compensated for it.
- System Engineers work over 50 hours every time they travel, which is a lot, and have never gotten compensated for it. We are the grunts.

Advice to Management

Quit hiring project managers, and hire more ISEs to do the workload

Current Employee - Program Finance Analyst II in Dulles, VA
Current Employee - Program Finance Analyst II in Dulles, VA
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Very flexible work life balance and leave schedule
    Good benefits
    Work is tolerable, occasionally rewarding
The work Harris is involved in is sometimes very interesting

    Cons

Hard to advance, very stingy with promotions
Work is monotonous sometimes, with no real value in lower rung employees' opinions
Salary is not comparable to other companies in the same industry (in the VA area)
Employees are not treated as valuable
Communication on processes is limited at best, hard to find out how certain things are done
    No holiday party

    Advice to Management

Employees need to be made to feel like they are more valued. Information is limited and not clear. There is a lot of animosity between divisions (HITS, BCD, GCSD) which leads to many problems. Distrust between divisions is horrendously bad for business and makes simple processes seem drawn out and ridiculous.

    Doesn't Recommend
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    9/80 work schedule.
There are some very talented engineers at Harris.

    Cons

    1. Hires good people, but has trouble retaining them. Hence over time mediocrity tends to collect.
    2. Hard work and incompetence are both rewarded or punished randomly.
    3. Harris bids contracts based on labor (number of bodies) rather than products. It focuses on keeping bodies "employed", so it disregards COTS solutions, and in some cases throws away internally developed solutions, so it can spend months/years reinventing yet again.

    Advice to Management

Stop relying on PowerPoint. Sooner or later we have to deliver a working product.
