I worked at Harvard University as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Looks great on your resume! People very nice...initially.

Cons

Management disorganized. Data silos. Customers inaccessible. Little direction, if any, from lower level management. Very long time frames for any decision, including project timelines.

Advice to Management

Figure out how to eliminate the politics, especially among the IT staff. It's not a contest...it's a team. I've worked in multiple Harvard schools/departments, and have the same advice for each.

I have been working at Harvard University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are some brilliant people around, who can be very inspiring. The university also has one of the best library systems in the world, which is a true perk of working here. There are also lectures on every conceivable topic all the time, so it's a great place to be if you believe in lifelong education.

    Cons

For every brilliant academic at the university, there are 10 arrogant ones who blatantly disrespect each other and the staff. Nothing works efficiently at the university, and there is a real lack of communication among people, departments, programs, etc. It's a real nightmare at times.

    Advice to Management

Centralize decision making and reduce redundant positions.

I worked at Harvard University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work/life balance and benefits. Pay that leads higher education compensation in the area.

    Cons

Still just compensated at a higher education level
