Pros

High growth period; very exciting. Optimistic workforce, very much a "can do" group of people. Good people who are dedicated.

Cons

High growth with little to no prioritization leading to motivated staff working excessively long hours. Process creeping into Hess. Some is good and badly needed, but there is a sense that process is displacing technical work required to make good decisions. Politics abounds. Too many empires being built. No "Hess Culture," rather an amalgamation of Chevron, BP, and Shell cultures,

Advice to Management

Choose niche based on strength. Company cannot do everything.

    Pros

If you buy into the culture (very old school. Example: only went business casual in 2006/7), you can do OK here. Pay is decent. Offers a Pension Plan. 6%/100% match 401k. Some VPs and senior management are very bright. Extremely fast paced. Never a down day. If you get into the Leadership Program you are gold. Has an aggressive long term vision.

    Cons

Need to be a "yes man". Mantra is "Nimble Independent." Nimble as long as you don't rock the boat. If you don't buy into the culture it's hard to survive. Some senior management are empty suits. Some departments work long hours. Hard to get home in time for dinner most days. Outsourced a lot of departments over the past few years. Old Hess mentality (Holidays Evenings Saturday Sunday) still lingers in the current senior management. Once they retire (next 5 years or so) hopefully a shot of progress can be made into the culture.

    Advice to Management

Instead of looking at the bottom line first and outsource departments, you should realize that employees are what makes the company. If you have happy employees, the bottom line will take care of itself. Better Work/Life balance. That's the "talk" but it needs to be backed up from senior management.
