    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

HP is good about work life balance
Work from home opportunities if you bully your manager into letting you do it
    Decent benefits

    Cons

HP Enterprise Services can't seem to break away from its former EDS mentality. This is exhibited in the behavior of the former EDS employees, most of whom lack a formal education (apparently that was acceptable at EDS). They tend to believe that the $ will keep rolling in no matter how badly they do their job since they work on mainly public sector contracts. Now that states in particular are cutting budgets, some Enterprise Services accounts seemed to be unprepared for the fact that they would now have to be accountable for honest billing practices. Some of the former EDS employees are also unaware of what defines professionalism and polite behavior. Expect rudeness, bullying and overall inappropriate behavior from them.

Despite the fact that HP overall has a female CEO, and other divisions do promote women, the old boy's club mentality of the former EDS makes Enterprise Services a breeding ground for misogynystic jerks who wouldn't be able to function in other companies. What's worse is that the few women who have made it to leadership positions trampled over other women to get there and are willing to play the old boy's club game. For a company that promotes diversity as much as HP does, its rather shocking what goes on in regard to female employees and how they are treated there.

Employee development doesn't exist. The tuition reimbursement program is not available company wide and even then, only if the account you are on has budgeted for it. The new Health Care University seemed promising, but was a disappointment. Employees without college or masters degrees somehow get positions that require them, although they don't have them, which tells the rest of the employees that their education isn't valued.

Pay is low and raises barely bump up your paycheck. Management also refuses to tell you what qualifies you for a decent raise - big secret there. So, its difficult to get one, period.

For a tech company, the IT infrastructure is sad and cheap.

The strategic direction of the company is unclear, other than wanting to be the "Cloud" solution for everyone. Its almost as if they haven't decided who they want to be when they grow up and are only putting out fires.

    Advice to Management

Act - don't react. Plan better.
    Hire educated employees.
Clean house in Enterprise Services - until you get rid of the EDS crowd completely, it will never be successful.
Develop your employees and encourage them to have a career in your organization - then maybe they will stay instead of having to leave to get out of the pigeon hole they get stuck in.
