I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

HP has good benefits, and a lot of nice people are working there. There is a lot of flexibility to work from home for those who wish to do so. Meg Whitman is popular with employees and we all have a lot of faith in her to turn HP around in the future (it will take a few years though).

Cons

Working at HP (at least in the Enterprise Group marketing and R&D organizations) has been less fun in the last few years. Budgets seem to continuously go down. For example, business travel is very limited and usually only Directors and above get to travel; even for trade shows only those who are presenters are allowed to attend. It's much easier for sales to get travel approval.
HP is in the process of laying off 27,000 people worldwide with about 1/3 of that in the U.S., so job security depends on the future outlook for your focus area; it was great to see though that HP also offered early retirement incentive packages and one doesn't really have to be very old to be able to take it.
HP sold the Cupertino site and all employees are now being moved to Palo Alto or Sunnyvale. As housing is cheaper the further south you live, this can be a real inconvenience to those who live in South San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy etc. Luckily HP is flexible with working from home more and many will do so for 2-3 days per week.
Career opportunities aren't great unless you want to move laterally. It's hard to get a job at the next level as HP seeks candidates that are already at that next level and often prefers to hire from outside rather than promote from within.

Advice to Management

Give opportunities to current employees for being promoted rather than seeking external candidates. While this is now the intent under Meg Whitman, in reality managers are still reluctant to promote; if a Req isn't approved for external hiring, then hiring managers seek candidates from within who are already at that level.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Manager is great. Department wants to push you towards new roles to further expand your toolkit. Open door policy. Casual and relaxed environment.

    Cons

Getting promoted to a new position is considered a horizontal move, so little pay is added. Management sends too many emails, from CEO to EVPs to VPs to Directors, its hard to get a clear vision of who's doing the steering.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the red tape. Don't cut our benefits, cut your luxuries.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunity. Despite economic and competitive headwinds, company has momentum, and new leadership. Hope for better, in an improving world-wide economy, new leadership.

    Cons

Last 12 years of 17 with company, plenty of dysfunctional and misguided management and strategies. It's been tough, but chose to pass on early retirement in favor of getting back to the HP Way. Hope my bet pays off!

    Advice to Management

Get back to the roots of the company, one that engineers worldwide admire: Shuck commodity products that only generate slim profit through cost reductions. Get back to niche engineering, where innovation creates new, lucrative, unexploited markets.
