I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time

Pros

- Cool , smart engineers
- learn about storage arrays

Cons

- The array is pretty much developed, not much new innovation or development work (software wise), mostly bug fixing.
- Management mostly rewards old timers
- Currently the place is crawling with program managers, and over the past year has become very management heavy.
- First level managers does not motivate people, or get to know them on a personal level to know their individual contribution / strengths / weakness.
- Very hard to get promotion past the senior engineer level.

Advice to Management

Get to know your employees, on a personal level, know their strengths , weakness, and how to make best use of them.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of people, outside the company, remember the old HP, back when it was synonymous with quality and may afford one undeserved respect based upon that reputation.

There are some good middle managers left over from the past, though their numbers are thinning fast.

    Cons

A game of musical chairs based upon seniority and connections.

Innovation is dead, with the exception of acquisitions which are quickly assimilated into the borg and reduced to undersized, HP clone operations.

Training and career development are not part of the new HP. Why train when you can hire from the outside?

    Advice to Management

Divest the company and break it back into a thousand pieces. The economy of huge scale isn't working for you or your employees.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of growth opportunities; amazing people - you can learn a lot, and they can make anything happen with very little. Fairly easy to move within the company.

    Cons

Abysmal pay - not enough to keep up with inflation. Company loyalty does not pay off here, even with "meets expectations" or "exceeds expectations" performance rating, the increases and bonuses are a joke. Although, it probably depends a lot on the customer account. My account was very lean - no money here. I had funding for conference registration, but not for the travel, and ended up not going!
