    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Large company. Support job changes across the company resulting in a lot of opportunities. Pretty good benefits package. Global company with opportunities available around the world.

    Cons

    Take total advantage of the economy being down to abuse salaried employees. Ridiculous amounts of hours expected (60-70+ per week year round is common) with no compensation -- not even comp time. They have eliminated nearly all support staff with the result that all administrative duties need to be performed by the salaried employees since their time for this is "free". No investment in employees. No financial support for acquiring technical certifications. No paid training.

    Advice to Management

    Stop viewing your people as commodities that have no individual value. Just because an employee is cheaper doesn't mean that they bring the same value. If you want to know why software projects are failing, talk to everyone on the project, not just the leadership. Everyone you talk to is going to present themselves in the light that shows them the best. You need to look at everyone to get the entire picture. If a team can't communicate effectively on-shore, they will never be successful with an off-shore team. Stop expecting front line managers to manage large numbers (20-50+) and still bill full time to projects; looks good on paper but if the projects fail and the employees are unhappy, does this really make financial sense?

    Pros

    Flexibility, great experiences, encouragement to take on new jobs, used to have great career opportunities

    Cons

    Management has lost their way and tried to be all things to all people. They really killed the goose that laid the golden egg by not valuing employees other than lip service. Basically any career movement within the company is gone.

    Advice to Management

    Do the hard thing and do what's RIGHT, not just what Wall Street wants or what will make Meg and the execs rich.
