I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than a year)

Pros

I work with cutting edge technology and am able to get my hands dirty with coding the operating systems of very expensive switches. Our main competitor is Cisco and every day is a race to be better than them. My manager doesn't pressure me to deliver. I dictate my own pace of work. I get to work with complex software and I have a big role in writing code that will be in millions of advanced switches.

Cons

HP has gone through several high-level management teams in the last few years. We are still feeling the adverse effects of the Mark Hurd era and the short-lived span of Leo Apotheker's 'leadership'. We are constantly in a state of flux and our future seems rather uncertain.

Advice to Management

You're on the right track. Stay the course.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

HP bought Autonomy for a fabulously high price, which was pretty cool for the UK taxman and for long-standing employees of that fabulously daring UK software house.

    Cons

Board volatility makes it impossible to act effectively on industry trends and big decisions. Autonomy could have turned into a great thing if they hadn't then fired those who sponsored the acquisition within 2 weeks.

Bureaucratic company culture destroys souls and makes the actual art of "doing" near impossible at times.

Weakness in middle management has destroyed the Aurasma business from the inside - rather than spinning it out in the consumer space, it is now being wasted on spin-ins to HP hardware for marketing points and novelty value at best. Such a waste.

Meg Whitman terrifies me and I imagine she drinks human blood.

    Advice to Management

Pointless to offer as they have no ability to act.
