I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Spent over 20 years with HP and it used to be a stellar company. Work life balance was, and still mostly is, very good. Hard working and dedicated work force for the most part. I will always treasure the knowledge I gained and the relationships I built with colleagues.

    Cons

The once excellent HP culture has been all but obliterated by a decade worth of buying up failing companies and adding their cultures to the overall mix. Depending on the department or the geographical location you work in, the environment is often hostile and toxic. Work force morale suffers from nearly constant layoffs since 2002. Bureaucracy and process paralysis make it exceedingly difficult for development teams to hit their deliverables. Cronyism, turf wars, constant re-orgs and empire building in the middle to upper management ranks often result in a miasma of shifting allegiances and one is never certain if the site you're working at will suddenly become a "go forward" site or one slated for a slow death. IT has been largely decimated by constant layoffs and "right shoring" and the company seems bent on getting rid of its more experienced workers (aka, the over 50 crowd) and replacing them with less expensive contractors and college hires. As a result, critical domain knowledge has been lost as many development teams now struggle to keep mission critical applications alive.

    Advice to Management

First, stop punishing the workforce with layoffs. The people you're throwing out the door aren't the ones who made the bad business decisions now affecting your top and bottom line growth. Second, get off the re-org merry-go-round. It creates the illusion of progress/strategy but keeps the business in a constant state of chaos. Third, an immediate moratorium on any further acquisitions - you paid far too much for most the ones you already bought in the first place. You increased the companies debt by billions and swelled the workforce to an unsustainable level, which has resulted in literally tens of thousands of them being laid off. They got paltry severances while you get handsomely rewarded for making the "hard decisions."

  2. "Well managed company"

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Well managed and structured, competitive salary and benefits.

    Cons

Poor executive leadership in the past. Current leadership is improving the current state of business and turning the company is around.

    Advice to Management

Stay on current course of action for improvement
