I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility, the ability to work remotely

    Cons

Disorganization, severe lack of leadership, chaotic projects, people are thrown into jobs without appropriate training, bottom line is meeting payment deadlines with no regard for the accuracy of the work, very poor morale, many angry, fed up people, leaders change their minds daily disrupting work progress and expect teams to work faster to make up for their flip flopping. It has been an absolute nightmare. Told by my HR leader that the company does not care about what the employee wants in their career they only care about filling empty slots so people are displaced out of jobs that are a good fit and put wherever there is a need to fill. That says it all...

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

HP is the original Silicon Valley start-up success story. But HP has grown up to be a second-rate bureaucracy. There was a voice of the workforce survey, but middle managers see the results they punished dissidents. This is why managers have to beg to get people to fill out the survey. The best thing is that remote work is allowed and enabled.

    Cons

The downside of replacing people from the top is that people downstream don't see career advancement. This makes it more necessary for middle managers to be even more focused on the internal politics of getting credit and shifting blame than on delighting customers.

    Advice to Management

Thin the middle management ranks. Look for bad managers instead of bad workers. Replace top-down performance review Gestapo tactics with 360 reviews. Workers now don't have a way to respond to whatever their direct managers rate them. Enable workers to communicate with each other across the organization rather than having all communication being funneled through the organization chart.
