I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

HP has fantastic technical talent, people are supportive and teams even in different countries work together to get the job done. Management is supportive and in case you screw something up, help you to actually fix things instead of inventing punishment. Also management is sitting in the same cubicles as regular people, with the same working conditions and are easy to approach in case you have questions.
Flex-time is probably the best kind you can get - as long as you get the job done on time, you can work at any hours or work at home.
IT services are reasonable, with an easy-to-use software catalog, full admin access to your computer and services like mobile email and Microsoft Lync access and a really great system with centrally-managed shared printers. Company laptops are mostly new and high-end (although of course only HP models).

Cons

HP senior management seems to have no clue about technical staff and focus is skewed towards sales and marketing teams; sometimes this leads to good engineers moving to sales jobs just to get better benefits and salary; often this leads to the wrong products being developed or prioritized because people who decide product priorities don't seem to be able to distinguish between a good product and a bad one.
Open-space environments with free-address desks and the lack of private areas like phone booths often lead to salespeople distracting others with walking around loud calls or "chilling out" killing time before a big presentation.
HP offices don't usually contain bonuses like free food, relaxation areas or fancy designs. Most countries don't have employee discounts on HP equipment purchases.
The current financial situation makes HP reduce costs - salaries and essential things are mostly unaffected, but things like travel, significant promotions and equipment requests are tightly controlled and there's a clear "please try to save money" message which may be depressing for some.

Advice to Management

HP should prioritize development of great competitive products by giving R&D the attention, priority and resources they deserve (this seems to be improving with Meg's changes). Until then people will continue joking "of course it failed - it's HP equipment!".

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Colleagues are mostly friendly and able to do good team work and relationship.
Customers appreciate our work and are often satisfied: a good recognition for each one.

    Cons

Too many groups/business units and areas that try to steal each other deals.

Bureaucracy is overwhelming people: the percentage of time spent on internal tools is so high to impact customer work.

    Advice to Management

This company needs to be tidy up.
