I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Large company with opportunities. Work from home

Cons

Layoffs and cuts, Salary increases were slow for high performers

Advice to Management

Focus on something. HP does way too many things. They acquire companies to get into industries and then do nothing with it (Palm).

The Autonomy acquisition is a joke. HP is the king of overpaying for acquisitions.

EDS was a great company in the day because it treated it's employees well. My few years at HP I did not see that same thing.

    Pros

    Work-Life Balance is part of the core culture, the move by HP to a remote office work program provides a lot of personal freedom and allows the worker to not have to sit in traffic.

    The pay is above the industry average with no cap on commissions. So solid six figure earnings are pretty common.

    Cons

    Work Force Reduction programs can be deployed at anytime and even if you are doing are great job , you could be out of a job.
    If you get laid-off you can't be rehired for one year

    Advice to Management

    Don't let your best people leave to go to the competition

    occasional, but consistent lapse in focus
    mid-management cronyism
    disconnect between Sr. Mgmt, mid-mgmt. and field
    laggard in product design and innovation

    Advice to Management

    rethink - devise better objectives - strategy and use of CRM
    flatten mgmt. layers
    better plans/strategies for leveraging key products
