Negative Outlook

I have been working at Hillshire Brands full-time (More than a year)

Pros

You're struggling so badly to accomplish the unrealistic expectations that you form really solid bonds with your co-workers who are "in the trenches" with you. Immensely (unrealistic) expectations which can grow you for future endeavors. Oh... and you're near the blue line.

Cons

This company is in a constant state of instability/ change/ uncertainty leaving its employees fearful that the "ship is sinking" and to get out now as it appears to only get worse. There is an overwhelmingly strong message that they do not care about their people. Example - constant re orgs, cutting benefits, saying that they're doing one thing yet little action behind the slogan. No work/life balance. It's never enough. Most people are spread too thin and it is encouraged to only take on more. They refuse to hear you if you express limits, boundaries, etc and expect you to be this robot who can handle all of the demand - even if it's an unrealistic scope. HR is entirely political and massages egos of senior management team and leaves Director level roles and below to figure it out on their own or leave basically... Toxic, negative environment where you quickly learn to keep your head low and adhere to the non confrontational, passive aggressive culture. They claim to be this new "start up" company where new ideas for processes and systems in which to operate are encouraged, yet if you offer up a new suggestion you will find they adhere to the old fashioned way anyway. So, you are met with a brick wall. You will be met with lots of 'red tape' or simply being ignored. They outsource their IT service to a foreign country which presents significant barriers that create such a conflict that it takes considerable time to get simple things accomplished. Then comes the blame as to why it took so long.... then they question your skill set. It is a daily game of survivor.

Advice to Management

Refresh the HR leadership so that Director level and below have a resource, a safe haven, an advocate, etc. And in general.. review the exit interviews ... there may be a trend or pattern there.... Invest in your people and you will see return on investment 10 fold! : )

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Hillshire Brands full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits between health and dental. Salary range was comfortable. Seasoned workers in the union knew many helpful ideas.

    Cons

Run Run Run the product, no floor leads to help with all the haaccp paperwork and sap entries. 10 Hour shifts turn into 12 hours a day, everyday. Union workers transported to other areas do not know how to run anything, faking the funk on knowing and helping other areas.

    Advice to Management

Add floor leads to avert all the workload and training to just one supervisor. A well estalished company has a great chain of command and uses it to its advantage.
