I worked at Hispanic Scholarship Fund full-time

Pros

Great mission. Most of the people working there mean well. Occasionally can overlook the poor leadership because the mission is important.

Cons

Horrible management. Little to no guidance in the overall strategic direction of the company. Policies and strategies change almost monthly. Employees feel overworked and under appreciated. Extremely high turnover.

    Pros

Great mission and real success in making an impact in the Hispanic community.
    Reasonable non-profit salaries.
Good infrastructure, support services and work environment - unlike many non-profits. Great location in downtown San Francisco

    Cons

High level mission and goals not very achievable - hard to relate day to day activities. Senior management can be very absent, with a lot of direction given only by email and phone.

    Advice to Management

Need to support "big goal" strategies with realistic plans to achieve them. Or set less lofty, but achievable visions. Needs to be more opportunity for people to voice honest dissenting opinions.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Hispanic Scholarship Fund full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Many team building activities, it shows that the organization wants to improve and unlike many companies even corporate companies we are given great perks. This organization does give a lot of experience of how the corporate world can look especially if this is your first job.

    Cons

A lots of turn over, ineffective technology systems. The management is a direct reflection of its leadership, they waste a lot of time with activities the promote transparency while continuing to have very little authentic communication and inclusion of some staff depending on departments. Also because there are many departments transparency can be difficult especially considering the different personalities that lead including and especially HR.

    Advice to Management

Don't be a hypocrite about how you want to improve communication when the clicks and favoritism are very apparent even in exchange of information. If your goal is transparency and impeccable practices then don't create personal friction.
