Pros

Great mission. Most of the people working there mean well. Occasionally can overlook the poor leadership because the mission is important.

Cons

Horrible management. Little to no guidance in the overall strategic direction of the company. Policies and strategies change almost monthly. Employees feel overworked and under appreciated. Extremely high turnover.

    Pros

Great mission and real success in making an impact in the Hispanic community.
    Reasonable non-profit salaries.
Good infrastructure, support services and work environment - unlike many non-profits. Great location in downtown San Francisco

    Cons

High level mission and goals not very achievable - hard to relate day to day activities. Senior management can be very absent, with a lot of direction given only by email and phone.

    Advice to Management

Need to support "big goal" strategies with realistic plans to achieve them. Or set less lofty, but achievable visions. Needs to be more opportunity for people to voice honest dissenting opinions.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Hispanic Scholarship Fund full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

HSF is like a "familia" and there is a strong work ethic there. The CEO and COO are very committed to the mission and brand of the organization.

HSF is a NOP and runs very lean, so it is a place for those who are intrinsically motivated, engaged, thoughtful, innovative and want to make a difference for the Latino community.

Overall, the organization treats people well, offers great total compensation and advancement opportunities. The benefits, including PTO, the office itself, and the people are amazing!

There is a wellness room, snacks and lots of opportunities for training and development.

    Cons

The work schedule could be more flexible for those who have an extra long commute to the HQ.

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye out for those that can lead teams, are benevolent and are aligned with the mission/vision.

There is an opportunity to further guide and coach staff that are not aligned with the org.
