Pros

The atmosphere and values at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital are undoubtedly exceptional. There is a strong and genuine commitment to improving the quality of life of the young clients and their families serviced by this organization. The hospital goes above and beyond to ensure that the focus remains on consistent and exceptional client care and as an employer, are able to keep staff satisfied as well.

Cons

Bloorview's Research Institute (BRI) is very young and the one area that needs attention. BRI remains in a development stage and this, in theory, should lend the opportunity for upward growth of current dedicated research staff. Unfortunately, BRI operates in an extremely hierarchal structure that appears to value personal relationships over professional readiness. Positions are created for some, and not others; these positions are often not posted and therefore, there is unequal and biased opportunity for upward movement. One's title (e.g. Associate, Coordinator, Assistant) within BRI is valued over experience and innovation and this is communicated by administration.

Advice: This is a challenging environment in which to build your career. If entering BRI as an executive health administrator, physician, or doctorate, the experience appears to be very positive.

Advice to Management

1. Involve your staff in the decision-making process, particularly decisions that directly impact their ability to perform well in their current position.
2. Ensure that management has adequate educational preparedness and professional experience to manage and address the research and clinical needs of all staff.
3. Some positions (regardless of said titles) require private workspace due to the nature of information handled. Safe-guarding client health data and providing client privacy should always take priority over one's "rank" within the "hierarchy".
4. LISTEN and CONSIDER the needs, concerns, and recommendations of staff. Particularly when staff have a wealth of experience and are willing to share their knowledge and skills in an effort to further build and develop BRI positively.
