Pros

Respected Fortune 500 company. Pay is decent, line of work can be interesting. Good health benefits. Flex Time was great! Tuition reimbursement is awesome (I was in a decent group with decent managers); they covered everything and never hesitated to do so even though my degree would eventually let me switch to another role (as long as it was something Honeywell was into it was supported).

Good to have experience of how a big company operates and understand different processes. There's an effort to get everyone Six Sigma certified. Huge plus to have on a resume.

Cons

Lots of knowledge is stuck in the brains of old timers that are on the verge of retirement or have already retired. A better process is needed for information retention.

Work is isolated to certain technologies and can be done without seeing the bigger picture of the product. It's nice to have visibility into what you're working on beyond its immediate purpose.

Working in a big company can be slow and bureaucratic. If you want quick results and accountability (rather than deal with people who can keep their jobs and do little to nothing) then get on an active team with important projects or look elsewhere.

Advice to Management

Promote people within a reasonable period of time, especially when they have shown an obvious growth in skills and responsibilities (and also have been given Bravo awards). Do away with the ridiculous quota of only being able to promote X amount of people per quarter based on team size (or increase the amount of X) and thus making people that deserve a promotion wait because of other people being in line for a promotion based on seniority. In addition, filling a spot for a senior position and not promoting from within is a great way to demoralize people.

Pay your employees for overtime. Get rid of the 6 hours of donation needed to get paid for anything above 6 hours - that's a huge rip off.

Finally, improve information retention. Document everything. Hiring young people to teach won't do; retention rate isn't what it used to be so knowledge isn't going to stay for long.

    Pros

Diverse products allowing pursuit of different careers. Many national and international sites giving opportunities to move. Strong focus on high tech products - jet engines and flight guidance/management systems - military and commercial products. There are reasonable training opportunities and a reasonable support for initiatives such as Six Sigma and Lean. If you take the initiative and know what you are doing, build consensus and get the right level of support it is possible to move the needle on things you initiate/believe in - and not just follow Leadership initiatives. There us a huge gap in the demographics - lots of 20+ year folk, many younger people but few "middle managers" in the 10 -15 year range - so opportunnities will be growing as teh old guard retires.

    Cons

It's a big corporation and the better you are at your job the more work you get. Slackers get to cruise. Cost of benefits far outstripping salaries. No respect for company service - they will cram someone with 10, 15, 20 years service in the same cubicle as someone who just joined the company - usually both of them in the same cubicle. Corporate policies are followed only when convenient - rules say you fly business class if a flight is over 8 hours, bosses say "fly in the back". Of course this only applies if you don' fly on one of the many corporate jets that the "leaders" fly around in.

    Advice to Management

Pay for performance. Reduce the gap between senior people and "Leadership".

    Pros

Great place to work due high level of communication and career counseling but number one is the required respect for others in all interactions. Wife works for a company where yelling and name calling is tolerated. That kind of behavior could get you verbal and then written warnings within Honeywell and, if not corrected, lead to loss of your job!

    Cons

    1. Compensation can be higher in other companies for same job. 2. Sometimes frustrating when management won't do the right thing to solve a problem because it's not part of the current strategy. Mostly, the right thing IS done though.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the needs of the customer. In IT, this means internal more than external. Customer service is provided lip service - and the aerospace infrastructure team and focals live it and are truly amazing - but other support groups still have room to grow/excel. Also, don't put all your eggs in one basket when implementing new software! Use a couple of vendors to see who has the better software and support.
