I worked at Hospira full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Major player in the specialty generic injectables and infusion therapy devices. Name alone can get you through doors. Many GPO contracts in effect.

Cons

Average compensation at best. Hospira is not an aggressive company and is reactionary to the marketplace when it comes to devices. Injectable contracts and GPO agreements not strongly enforced at the customer level to the extent their competitors do.

Advice to Management

Be aggressive and don't believe the hype that because you are Hospira (or the old Abbott HPD) that you are automatically guaranteed a place at the customer's "table". Take a look at how your competitors write and enforce their customer contracts. Hospira is too soft with customers for their own good. Stop letting customers sign up for multi-line discounts and then just let them go free, while keeping their leveraged prices, when they decide to jump to a competitor with a "me-too" product.

I worked at Hospira full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good starting salary. Large company. Opportunity to advance as a "Yes Man". Hospira is part of an oligopoly in the IV bag industry and thereby can't be shut down without many humans losing their lives who depend on their product. If they get bought out, all will benefit, especially if they chop the head off the management in Austin that is killing the company.

    Cons

Outdated technology. Poor bipolar management from the top down in the Austin Plant. They want to change their culture and invest heavily in Kaizen and Lean. However, they resist and rid themselves of management who practice this philosophy because they are so used to "Top Down" decisions. It was a horrible experience that lasted longer than it should have been. I understand why they are being audited, fined and scrutinized by the FDA.

    Advice to Management

In Austin, get rid of the Good Ol' Boy system that pits the mechanics against the manufacturing supervisors. Get rid of the power struggle up top and focus on your product instead of politics. This isn't a mechanic shop, it's a manufacturing plant that operates @ 60% due to laziness and power struggles.

I have been working at Hospira full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I've met great people and have learned a lot.

    Cons

    Always doing more with less.
Getting promoted always means getting the very bottom of the pay grade, regardless of experience.
Hire from outside of the company/department a lot when current employees are willing and able to take on more with a pay increase.
Talented people have left in droves as of late.

    Advice to Management

I don't even know what to say at this point besides management needs to start listening to the underlings and working on keeping valuable talent within this company.
