Pros

Higher than average pay to counter poor reputation as an employer
Great if you aspire to work in India in a few years or need a higher paying job until you find a good company to work for.

Cons

- Very top heavy organization in corporate with lots of politics and finger pointing. Management does NOT have your back, as most work load and blame trickles down from VP, to more VPs, to Directors, to Managers, and finally to the few remaining staff level employees or temps to solve the problem.
 - Finger pointing culture motivates lower levels to not communicate real problems for fear of punishment
 - Short-term focus for immediate financial gain versus what's right for the longer-term.
 - Business is now almost paralyzed by overly conservative quality and regulatory processes because of past sins from lack of investment and succession planning.

Advice to Management

If you focus on patient outcomes and service the money will come, focusing on money first will destroy the company over time. Patient-centricity will attract talent motivated to perform for more than just money. Focusing on money primarly will attract talent primarly interested in money. Reward employees who do the right thing in supporting service levels, and remove those who game the system for bonuses. Flatten the management structure and hire more doers. Keep leaders willing to get hands dirty and hold themselves accountable. Pay attention to turnover and reasons for that.

Good luck!

I worked at Hospira full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good 401K and health benefits. Average or better than average for vacations, sick leaves and other types of leaves. Good co-workers, most of whom are "over-qualified" for the work they are doing.

    Good severance packages.

    Cons

The place suffered from under-funding AND poor distribution of human resources.

The atmosphere was awful. Even the newly hired wanted out within a few months. When long time employees got their layoff notices, instead of crying their eyes out, they all seem really happy like they just won the lottery.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Hospira full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great pay, great easy work

    Cons

12 hour shifts, rules don't apply to everyone. SInce we got "spun off" as Hospira, things have gone bad. No retirement benefits, unless you are in the class of upper management that makes enough to not need it. You have to watch your pay check every week to be sure you got paid for the hours that you worked. HR went from 4 great people to a full room of people that can only answer, I will check on that for you!

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes. People chewing gum in production areas, cell phones in rooms, candy wrappers in production, excessive breaks, people walk out of sterile areas in gowning, and then right back in, and the language from temps to management is very offensive. Make all rules apply to everyone. We have policies for safety, ergonomics, and aseptic rules that are broken constantly. Give long time employees a reason to stay. When we were Abbott Labs, no one quit, no one got fired. With Hospira the turn over has gone through the roof.
