I worked at Hospital for Special Surgery full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Steady work, not too crazy
Salary can be competitive
New technologies keep getting adopted

Cons

IT systems and policies are too rigid and restrictive
There are not career paths for staff, never saw anyone getting a promotion, the organization always recruits new people for open positions

Advice to Management

I have seen a lot of change (not for the best). I agree that the Hospital has to be run responsibly but it is not a corporation. Moreover, HSS goods are because of the staff so try to recognize it.

I worked at Hospital for Special Surgery full-time

    Pros

Excellent benefits and time off, pride in the mission to get people mobile again. Annual cost of living increase is appreciated.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for advancement unless you buddy up to higher management or earn a Masters degree (they love those to the detriment of perfectly qualified internal candidates). The CEO is aggressive and management seems to be full of "yes men" (and women) who do a poor job of acting for the benefit of their employees' sanity. Their Press Ganey employee satisfaction surveys are a joke - everyone eventually gives high grades because they don't want to endlessly review why certain elements scored badly.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job of learning the difference between excellence and aggression. You're driving good people from HSS due to your constant need for more, more, more.
