I worked at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Your colleagues. Publishing houses, in general, have a family feel to them. However, most publishing houses are getting colder, and more impersonal. HMH, on the other hand, still maintains an air of familiar concern.

Cons

You really have to jump around to get ahead. There isn't a lot of upward mobility, except for what you make yourself.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are the best reason. they cost a little more than some companies, but the health insurance is really good.

    Cons

There is too much turn over at the top executive level for Operations and Information technology. It is hard to get traction on emerging technology and innovative solution delivery.

    Advice to Management

Make sure to know what people do everyday for their jobs.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to work with some really bright, intelligent, and people with a passion around education.

    Cons

The vision is unclear, the gaps between where they want to go and how to get there are too great, and they don't know who they want to be when they grow up.

    Advice to Management

Moving from transactional sales to being a real educational leader requires thought leadership, and more aggressive change. The culture is riddled with people with low morals, poor ethics, and weak management leadership.
