Pros

1) Broad-based experience 2) Exposure to senior leaders in other organizations 3) Annual bonus 4) Caring coworkers 5) Travel 6) Catered lunch on presentation days (average of 1 per week)

Cons

1) Lower salary, 2) Long hours at times, 3) Cannot advance to high level without a PhD, 4) Menial tasks at times, 5) Conflicting priorities

Advice to Management

Junior staff needs to be developed more and given more responsibility. Its easy to get lost in projects, particularly high-profile ones but this can sometimes leave junior staff wondering what to do next.

    - Matrixed organization carries with it the opportunity to work cross functionally with other program areas
    - Work-life balance
    - Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K match) are just as good, if not superior to most other employers
    - Everyone employee gets his/her own office
    - Great location in Old Town Alexandria right on the river
    - Brown bag catered lunches (about 1 per week)
    - SIOP conference and membership dues paid for

    Cons

    - Not a terribly social environment (most people spend their day working independently in their own office)

I worked at Human Resources Research Organization (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great I/O experience across many different content areas. Opportunity to learn and grow. Management is hands on but most project managers do not micromanage employees who take initiative and show that they are reliable. Not a high pressure environment like some I/O consulting firms or groups. Most people work 8-5 or 9-6. Research/academic feel, not sales oriented/not slick.

    Cons

Not a fun environment. The majority of employees tend to be introverted and serious. Not a social atmosphere at all - but people are nice.

    Advice to Management

Keep lines of communication open to all levels of employee and allow those interested in non I/O business to pursue those opportunities. Put more funding into business development for all levels of employees.
