Pros

Compared to other companies in Louisville, Humana has very good benefits and other perks (i.e. subsidized fitness center, subsidized parking/public transportation, employee dining facilities, perks for healthy lifestyle and behavior, etc.). Since Humana is growing, job security seems very good. According to Humana's management, the company promotes internal career opportunities. And Humana seems to have a good reputation as a company and employer.

Cons

Salaries of long-time non-management employees (with a track record!) are not in step with current market conditions. Consequently, salary compression can be significant after 5+ years in the same position. It can be disheartening to see new hires with less experience and same or less education come in and make more money than a tenured, experienced and successful employee.
Middle management is not doing such a great job at grooming and advancing low-level non-management employees. There seems to be a reluctance to promote employees into a management position. This could be due in part to Humana's organizational structure which has more levels of management than non-management. Non-management consists of only three levels (not counting interns): specialists (hourly), analysts (salaried) and consultants (salaried). Management has the following levels: front-line leader, project manager, manager (1st level), manager (2nd level), director (1st level), director (2nd level), segment VP, VP, Senior VP.
Humana's performance review process is inadequate! Employees must first review themselves before managers prepare their appraisals. Around performance time, managers have to fight hard to get a good slice of the 'salary-increase-pie'. If your manager doesn't know how to fight, you loose!

Advice to Management

Provide better training to middle management so they can be better managers to their direct reports.
Change the performance review process for non-management employees. Direct reports and managers should prepare their performance reviews concurrently, not one after the other. This would force managers to actually think about the contributions and performance of their direct reports.
Restructure Humana from a silo to a matrix organization. A matrix organization fosters learning and cross-training. And most importantly, it allows an organization to LIVE change, not just talk about it.

    Pros

    They really do try to provide great benefits and a positive work-life balance. Many have been here long-term. They also care that each employee has a development plan and also really do want managers to care about their direct reports.

    Cons

    Compensation. For higher priced positions, not always one of the better payers. Will lose employees over money. Equity awards provided very sparingly.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate organizational changes better, and get ahead of the rumor mill. At present, changes just occur, and you kind of find out.
