I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

The people are great and there are definitely some great perks including 22 vacation days, spot bonuses, free soft drinks, etc. Some of the projects are very interesting and you can have a lot of flexibility as part of work/ life balance.

Can get into the niche industry of Healthcare.

Cons

You can get stuck on some really boring and long travel clients. In addition, work can sometimes be unpredictable with long hours and work over the weekends. I think the Senior Management needs to develop a better future vision. Upward movement (promotion) can be difficult.

Advice to Management

Need better strategy

I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Huron is well positioned in the market as it has been selective with the types of service offerings and industries served that have sustainable needs. Investment is being made in all core businesses to meet the high demand for performance improvement while building solutions to meet the dynamic needs of the market. The firm has a focus on it's people initiatives (coaching, development and performance) and there are many initiatives to further build a rich culture of collaboration through values, diversity and inclusion, leadership development, community service, and corporate social responsibility. It's an excellent environment to build your career and the firm is improving the mobility of it's staff across solution areas. There is also a unique opportunity to be part of an entrepreneurial environment within the brand and resources of Huron - this is especially true with our emerging businesses.

    Cons

The firm continues to build it's infrastructure, keeping in mind Huron is a relatively new company and is experience high growth. Growing the right infrastructure and programs to support that growth is a work in process but it's a focal point of management. Entry level compensation is not as competitive as some of the larger firms, but there is signficant upside to building your career in a firm the size of Huron in terms of development, recognition and leadership path for high performers. Most consultants travel Mon-Thur every week, so it's a lifestyle you must be amenable to or this is not the right place.

    Advice to Management

Marketing and brand development is something that is heavily weighted in the work we do and reputation we build with our clients, employees and talent market. Having a unified brand strategy that addresses clients, investors, talent, community, and employees is an opportunity for the firm to tell our story and gain more visibility.

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The analyst and associate levels are full of bright, energetic, genuine people that can become lifelong friends

The analytical and project management training you receive is very robust

    Cons

-Very little abstract thought required in the work
-Professionals are discouraged from participating in business development activities
    -Little entreprenuership in the culture
-Good old boy network within upper management with old Arthur Anderson and other Big 4 connections driving much of the hierarchy
-The illusion of merit-based advancement is perpetuated by a byzantine performance evaluation process that is prioritized less and less in favor of subjective informal tribal evaluation as you advance
-Some managers are invested in the development of their teams, but others see it as a chore
-Emotional intelligence is not considered a core competency of management

    Advice to Management

Encourage the junior professionals to participate in some sort of business development activity if you want them to feel engaged and invested in the organization, unless organic growth is not part of the long term plan and you prefer to churn through new hires after 2-3 years.
