Pros

Good benefits (healthcare, vacation/time off) and networking opportunity. The people are dedicated even though they often feel resentment toward the company and its "ways."

Cons

Inconsistent promotion standards. Hypocrytical when applying mission/vision statements. They expect 100% dedication without reciprocation. Salaries are below average when compared to similar positions in other companies. No true leadership vision and no planning.

Advice to Management

Set an attainable vision for the company and develop a plan to achieve it. Treat employees fairly. A title does not guarantee competency. Don't be so scared to get rid of the incompetent people in the company. Shifting them to other positions does not cure the problem.

Be transparent, direct, and make reasonable decisions, not whimsical ones

I have been working at IATA as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Once you're on a permanent contract its a relatively cushy organisation to work for, lots of benefits and perks. Your workload is not monitored and you can get away with really low productivity. If you enjoy taking a back seat IATA is for you. If you have any ambition, stay away.

    Cons

Management is quite simply terrible. Contradictory goals confuse strategy. Upper management apparently have zero interest in the mechanics of the organisation, how it actually functions on a daily level. Mid-level managers are technically competent but function without strategy and no authority. Competing priorities means no priorities. There are not enough lower level staff to get the standard functions of any business completed: order management, customer service, even answering emails within a reasonable time frame etc etc. Everyone is a manager, everyone too high up to get their hands dirty actually resolving issues. Money, time and energy is simply wasted. Customers are devalued. Perhaps the worst thing is the treatment of the staff: rolling contracts, no job security, no value placed on staff and their knowledge. As soon as you try to get a handle on something staff leave and you have to start all over again. Utterly demoralising. Problems do not get fixed, they just get kicked down the road. If this organisation was beholden to market forces it would have gone bankrupt a long time ago. Its a giant bureaucracy feeding on the excess of the airline industry. Can't see that happening indefinitely.

    Advice to Management

Slim down, get real, identify your problems and actually do something about them. Value your staff. Words are not enough. IATA needs serious action.
