I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

You get a vast number of opportunities and choices regarding the type of work that you do. You also are part of a truly global family, which is a privilege and a huge learning opportunity.

Cons

Because of its size, it is a little bit like "working for the post office". You are often so separated from the end-result of your efforts that you often have to search for the meaning of your day-to-day activities.

Advice to Management

Stop spinning wheels and concentrate on business-driven activities. An overhaul of the top tiers of executives would be a very healthy thing.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work with a wide range of solutions and customers

    Cons

Salary is below market, focus on current week/month attainment. Span of control and compensation are siloed. Customer set is limited by corporate direction, not relationships. Management and Account coverage matrix turn-over is annual or more sometimes more frequent. Just when you get into an account, because you haven't closing anything, you may be taken off.

    Advice to Management

Value of customer relationships is completely ignored. Customers buy from people they know and trust, especially for complex solutions. This is completely ignored at all but the largest accounts.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Competitive salary
    EXCELLENT Benefits
Vast knowledge base & learning resources
Great place to build your skill base
    Global teams

    Cons

    VERY High Stress
Executive Management that is only interested in their next position
Managers that often have little actual management experience
Limited respect for the individual employee
Very high attrition through layoffs within the US workforce

    Advice to Management

Stop laying off subject matter experts & US workforce. You are losing many years worth of intellectual capital, dedication, loyalty and respect every time IBM lets someone with 20+ years of experience go. Replacing the US employee with a foreign workforce helps lower man hour costs, but is costing IBM productivity and dedication due to the lower skilled, less experienced asian, mexican, european, chinese, and slavic workers they are replacing long time US workers with. Stop focusing on the stock price and profit margin and focus on revitalizing workforce in America!
