Pros

Access to an incredible knowledge pool (think Master Inventors, Patent Owners, Distinguished Engineers, even Nobel Prizes), great internal collaboration tools allowing free-flow of information throughout the company and the globe, non-sales jobs provide lots of flexibility for side-projects that can add value to the company.

Cons

Work-life balance is dwindling (just lost home internet reimbursement), micro-management is rampant, no one but people in sales jobs are 'safe' from 'reorganizations', pay structure makes it difficult to budget.

Advice to Management

Stop being opportunistic in laying off people in this economic downturn and take care of your most important 'resource', as you call us ... your employees.

    Pros

Relative job security - in a tough environment IBM will weather the storm better than others.

    Cons

There is little employee representation at IBM, and no Union that can be spoken of. Performance ratings [PBC] are often used to justify separation and avoid redundancy payments.

There is a forced distribution on performance ratings across GBS whereby over 60% of staff must come up as "average performer". As a resuly your objectives [which are forced onto you, not negotiated as such: an email from the MD tells you what to write] are more or less binding depending on what rating the "management team" wants to give you.

    Advice to Management
