I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Breadth of technology
    Highly skilled work force
    Large community for skill tap

    Cons

Loss of core value of respect for the individual
Too focused on short term bottom line instead of maximizing long term value
    Bureaucracy
Too many restrictions on hiring making it difficult to transition to other jobs

    Advice to Management

Relearn how to foster the sense of community and camaraderie that made IBM great. Stop focusing only on the short term returns and remember that the work force you have is a great asset that if you stroke it, it will stroke you back.

I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people who work at IBM research are quite smart, and there are lunch time seminars from both in house speakers and visiting academics several times a week, so there are a lot of opportunities to learn, colloborate, and add to your professional network. The pay is also quite good (about 80K for a PhD intern) and they have a housing/transportation deal in place that means you don't have to bother about a car unless you want one for personal use.

    Cons

The office building was deliberately designed so none of the offices have windows (the theory being it would drive people to congregate around the whiteboards in the hallways); spending the entire workday in a windowless office is as much fun as it sounds.
