I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

-Flexible schedule depending on manager. Able to work from home sometimes.
-Large number of vacation days and holidays that are instantly available (Don't have to wait to accrue)
-Well developed business practices with regards to software development.

Cons

-Lots of legacy code.
-While the processes are good to prevent bad code, it sometimes means slow software development cycles.
-Many levels of management can stifle innovation.
-Small semi-annual layoffs

Advice to Management

Make the company more attractive and exciting to young smart engineers before all the older employees retire and take all their decades of knowledge with them.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

4 consecutive years of record earnings, record profits, and record cash on hand. Ability to work remotely can be very helpful.

    Cons

Recent management actions show a lack of concern for employees. In spite of 4 years of record profits, layoffs continue, 50% of employees get no raise at all, health care benefits continue to decrease, retirement plan in place at time of hire was completely taken away, with 61% profit in our business sector in 2012 no bonus was paid because "we didn't meet the target". Employee morale is the lowest I've seen in my 31 years with the company. I literally have to buy my own pens and paper.

    Advice to Management

Be fair and pay what was promised for a job well done.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Doesn't matter how frequently your interests keep changing, you will always find something interesting to do within IBM - consulting, software, hardware, sales, marketing, et al.
    - Allows working remotely. Amazing work-life balance.
    - Easy to move between geographies(domestically and internationally)

    Cons

    - As with any big company, the amount of bureaucracy tends to be a lot more.
    - Compensation good, but, within consulting, not as good as some of its competitors.
