I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The environment is almost totally virtual; working from home was GREAT. IBM has resources, brand recognition and money to get information, analysis and respect that you will not find with many other organizations. Response levels are HIGH; for good or bad employees are usually "online" or reachable in one way or another. There are some very high callibre people you will only work with in a company like IBM.

    Cons

This is an enormous company with far too many useless layers of management. Half my job was spent creating "fire-drill" reports for managers to present to their managers. Outside of certain labs and tech groups, there is very little innovation anymore; once a company is acquired all the monetary incentives do little to retain real talent or motivated employees.

    Advice to Management

There is little anyone can do to change the current climate; managers only reward yes-men/women, suck-ups and those who will/can "cover" for them. Managers routinely throw employees or other departments under the bus. There is no sense of comaraderie or solidarity anymore, and the system is broken from the top down.

I have been working at IBM as a contractor

    Pros

I have a job and can pay my rent.

    Cons

Use contractors to their advantage. Reduces thier hours if quarterly numbers are not met.

    Advice to Management

Ask good people if they have aspirations for a career. Possibly invest in those people a little for a positive return.
