I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Have to be aggressive. Most employees are very experienced, can be tough for college hires

Cons

Impersonal, unclear development requirements/opportunities. Management does not communicate clearly with lower level employees.

Advice to Management

More mentoring

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to move around within a global organization (they actively encourage techical staff to consider moving to China, India or Africa).

They encourage patent invention and intellictual IP

    Cons

They have lost their way. Senior management encourages a message of "client first". Yet they have slashed staffing to WAY beyond the ability to create, deliver, market and train products of quality to their customers. Research and engineering employees who truly believe in doing a great job no longer have the ability to do so.

IBM is aggressively moving towards cloud/big data technologies, but are trying to do so with little investment.

Do more with less is fine.. and sometimes a reality. But do more with less for years, and less benefits and no work-life balance is not sustainable.

    Advice to Management

IBM employees want to do the right thing. They are hard working, bright individuals with integrity and loyalty to their jobs. The breaking point has been reached. Slash and burn has taken too great a toll on products (that make money despite IBM) and the employees who work on them. Invest in your people. Give them the ability to succeed.

    Pros

Learning Experience in different fields, Great Team members... Good Benefits

    Cons

If they want to reduce head count your gone no matter how many years you have worked for them... They will treat you like a outsider when they let you go.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the people that work for you... remember they are the ones that do the work so upper management looks good.
