I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

IBM has a true grasp of business, plans well, and teaches its employees. It is the perfect place to begin a career and learn all you can. If you can manage to stay relevant, it can also be a great place to end your career, aka retire.

Cons

IBM has lost some of what used to be what set it apart: Respect for the Individual. It was too quick to try to mirror some of the behaviors of newer, fresher companies in the 80's and 90's. Most of those companies are no longer around; IBM managed to outlast them, but at the cost of some great talent.

Advice to Management

Remember to foster the loyalty that made IBM a great company. An employee having a rough time may say the wrong thing to the wrong person and in a flash their career is over.

I worked at IBM as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Looks great on your resume, nice coworkers, many people can work from home at least some days.

    Cons

They modify open source code and sell it for thousands, hire most people in countries other than the US but still claim to be a US company, and try to patch together products they got in acquisitions rather than truly innovate. They're staid, not in step with today's business, and they put profits before people. Also hire contractors for lower-level jobs, with no benefits at all, not even paid holidays, yet the agencies you're forced to work through take 35-40% of every dollar your earn as long as you work there.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There's always opportunity to get promoted and take on interesting work.

    Cons

Software Engineers in general should make more, and IBM does okay financial, so pay increases should occur more often.

    Advice to Management

Reward your more talented engineers more often.
