I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

IBM is still the leading solutions provider in the world, providing all elements of a total solution either stand-alone or integrated (SW, HW, Consulting, Services..).. I enjoyed and feel privileged to have worked in IBM's global services organizations.. I would recommend IBM's global services organization to anyone..

Cons

IBM has become to top heavy,,, too many levels of executives, most time 5-6 layers of VPs between the CEO and field.. this needs to be trimmed to a more controllable model similar to what Gerstner implemented on his arrival (2-4 layers).. IBM also does not seem to practice one of the credo's it had when I joined, "respect for the individual".. they need to be focused on the bottom line, but not with sacrificing respect for its employees.. there are still a few execs in IBM that carry the respect tradition on, and they seem to be quire successful.. may some one needs focus on that again..

Advice to Management

trim the VP fat, focus on what is needed to improve the employees capability and affordability to perform their jobs mobilly..

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large opportunities to work on the number of different project. Educational aspect is excellent. Life/work balance is good.

    Cons

IBM should consider different compensation rules for the top performers. Frequent lack of efficiency in the execution path which is the result of the large organizations.

    Advice to Management

Increase the efficiency of the execution path. More focus regarding the compensation for the top performers.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pre-sales team at the time was great as we sold SDLC solutions to medical device, pharma and telecommunications companies

    Cons

Pressure, like most public companies, causes trade-offs between short-term sales and longer term positive change to the client. That's where continuity of revenue comes from, after you can really partner with the client. This advice comes from a Client Executive Unit Director.

    Advice to Management

Take a longer term view of each client, measuring Client Exec coverage by their full representation of all brands covered, to fully leverage IBM's invested acquisitions and brands. Otherwise, Client Execs select just enough to suit their narrower goals, while the client and IBM miss their potential.
