I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Brand name recognition for your next job, for which you should begin prepping for as soon as you enter. You can feel good about contributing to the executive compensation.

Cons

All non-executives have their salary capped at 10% below industry average. The yearly rating system has a mandate of putting 10% of the employees in the "improve or be let go" bucket, applied at all levels, and within all groups. There is a very depressed vibe, company wide.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There is an unlimited opportunity to learn about hot new topics at IBM. I have access to experts on just about any new technology and can ask them questions and give my views. There is also opportunities to apply this new knowledge on products or projects around the globe.

    Cons

The raises have dried up in many areas of IBM. This is a big problem.

    Advice to Management

Let's keep some left-brain / right-brain going on here. Numbers are important but a lot of IBMers think we make bad decisions sometimes because we don't understand our numbers.

I have been working at IBM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Competitive compensation
    Flexible hours, depending
Brilliant coworkers, some of the best in their field
Poughkeepsie is a great place to live

    Cons

Regular layoffs, lack of job security due to restructuring
Cutting small office perks like coffee

    Advice to Management

Don't cut benefits like sponsoring further education back. It will hinder efforts to keep recruiting the best candidates. Consider employee quality of life before making cuts; it's not just a numbers game.
