Pros

The only thing you can get form IBM is a good name on the cv.

Cons

Probably I've been unlucky, but I don't think IBM is a good place for a PhD candidates.
I don't even have a decent workstation, the salary is bad and people are not nice at all.

Advice to Management

Mentoring is important and managers should understand it

    Pros

IBM Research offers great opportunities for scientific research, and development of new cutting edge technologies. In my opinion, this is the best and technically strongest industrial research center in the world.

    Cons

Overall the place is very good. However, there are some minor irritating things e.g., there are no amenities you can find in almost every software company.

    Advice to Management

I think there is some disconnect between the top management and regular employees.

    Pros

Some of the old IBM values are retained by individuals The benefits program is comprehensive but not overly generous. If you can stay at IBM long enough the fellow IBM'rs you meet will be supportive through out your career. Lots of good on line training available. The name still carries a cachet.

    Cons

The software group is broken in to product pillars that cause customer confusion Te rating system is not employed in a fair and equitable manner.

Poor communication from management to employees other than share performance.

    Advice to Management

Catch people doing the right things and praise and reward through out the year, not just at year end.
