I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

IBM is a good place to make contacts and to network. Many people are quite knowledgeable, and if you stick with them, you can learn a lot.

    Cons

IBM tends to layoff hundreds or thousands of people every quarter or two if they need to boost profit (by decreasing payroll). If you're ok with the knowledge that you could be fired at anytime – even if you have decent performance reviews – then IBM is great for you. Also – it is IBM’s stated policy to pay 80% of the mean salary for a job in it's geography. In other words, it is the stated policy to pay less than you could get at many other places.

    Advice to Management

Mass layoffs are short sighted. Investors will figure this out soon.

"Unstable long-term US employment, but, otherwise a great opportunity."

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM provides employment flexibility, independence and a sharing of knowledge with professional co-workers. As an Enterprise Architect and Trusted Advisor, I was able to provide strategic influence over customer technologies and business operations. It was a great opportunity to help many different organizations.

    Cons

I had little influence on IBM's direction and management seemed to have been trying to figure out what the next leadership direction might be, at least regarding US employment. Employee concerns over employment may be summed up in a remark I heard... There are 2 types of IBM'ers, those that were laid off, and those that fear they will soon be laid off.

    Advice to Management

Stop chasing the 2015 promised stock value and start rebuilding the US presence. The return to shareholders for 2015, as promised, would be nice, but, keeping the company operating beyond 2015 would be even nicer. ...Best wishes.
