I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The environment is very accommodating to individual needs. The management realizes that the salaries are not the greatest in the industry and so is willing to through extra undocumented freebies - flexible work hours, time-off.

    Cons

The individual is often not rewarded fairly - i.e. not proportional to the work he/she does. The bonus is 5% when you get the best rating. and stocks are not awarded to engineers

    Advice to Management

Engineers are core to the business but the management thinks that the programming can be done by any-one. The company seems to have an inproportionate number of managers and project managers.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

IBM is a huge bureaucracy. There are a few excellent, highly skilled and motivated employees, but also a huge overhang of non-productive, incapable middle management types. IBM goes through constant layoffs, but instead of cutting the deadwood in middle management, they workers. 2/3rds of middle managers could be removed with no noticeable impact, other than an improvement in the bottom line.

    Cons

The sales process is chaotic with no coordination across business areas. Layers upon layers of middle management making presentations to each other. Middle management has no understanding of what the products that are being sold actually do and no contact at all with customers. Ridiculously difficult to get anything done. IBM is notorious for "stacking", ie. having multiple parallel organizations selling the same solution to a single customer.

    Advice to Management

Enjoy your golden parachute. IBM revenues and profitability are in a tailspin and management has no idea how to adjust to the new realities.
