I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Most technical employees are good and know what they are doing

Cons

Old boys' network: promoting wrong people. Incompetent middle management. Too much over-time. No work-life balance.

Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Numerous career paths from which to choose. Excellent opportunities for career growth or even a career change and still remain with the company. They have very diverse workforce. They also believe in equal pay for equal work, regardless of race, sex, religion or sexual orientation.

    Cons

Bureaucracy! Too many layers of management. This tends to create a bubble up effect, when an issue arises at the staff level, by time the executives are engage they are told everything is under control. Meanwhile the fire rages out of control. Because of this, most executives seem out of touch with the teams on the front lines. The executives always tend to get low ratings on the employee surveys.

Also, work / life balance doesn't really exist. Most people that want to advance in their career are working 65+ hours per week.

    Advice to Management

Come down from your perch and meet with low level staff. Listen to your employees on the front line. Implement their suggestions.

I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The location where I was working was predominantly engineers, so the atmosphere was fairly relaxed and technical. Everyone was relatively laid-back.

    Cons

The way that their process worked at the time could lead to dev and UI people butting heads. Engineers would wander off and make UI decisions all week, then get pixel-specific feedback periodically in meetings. It seemed like a backwards way to do things.

    Advice to Management

Separate the UI and implementation more between the people who actually know what's needed. They could have changed this by now for all I know, or maybe interns were just in a weird spot.
