I worked at ICON full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Exciting projects across a wide variety of therapy areas and sponsors

Cons

People are not valued as they were 5 years ago. Having been a global department head, my compensation was okay but generally the company has become very tight fisted in rewarding its people.

Advice to Management

Innovation and quality suffer when you focus too much on margins and don't value your people

I worked at ICON full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful co-workers - ICON has a knack for recruiting smart, capable, intelligent, diligent workers, so you get to work with teams full of some truly amazing, supportive people. Since it is a global company, you are also afforded the opportunity to work with people around the world, which is incredibly exciting and an indelible learning experience.

Great company to help one obtain experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

    Cons

Terrible salaries - extremely low pay (pay is practically a joke here). Very important to negotiate salary or they will low low-ball you.

As many others have mentioned, there is absolutely no help with career development - so many employees are horrendously underpaid and the opportunities for advancement/promotions are extremely limited and practically nonexistent for certain job titles. The company is quite literally bleeding talent left and right (turn-over is VERY high) and losing great employees for this reason and many more. ICON does NOT care about its people.

Unless you want a stagnant career path and terrible pay, make sure to move on once you've gained enough experience.

    Advice to Management

This will probably fall on deaf ears but here goes: reevaluate your appalling company culture ASAP.

In the process of becoming so hideously profit-driven and focused on ridiculously inane metrics, the company has completely sacrificed its focus on people. ICON may recruit the best but places little importance on developing and nurturing that talent. Employees are overworked, underpaid, and under-appreciated.

Stop sacrificing quality for profit - you will only lose in the end. Reward the loyalty of your employees. UTILIZE your talent! Wake up and start caring about your workers before you lose them.
