Pros

Good benefits and interesting work.

Cons

I had a horrible experience working at IFPRI. I was interviewed over the phone and when I started working, my manager literally said that she wished she had seen me in person before hiring me. Hiring, firing, and promotion are done based on race. African-Americans are relegated to the maintenance department (with a few exceptions). If you are a woman from the Philippines, they will hire you as admin staff. If you are white, research position. Again, there are some exceptions, but the hiring and firing practices haven’t changed much since the organization was founded in the 1970’s. The HR department really couldn’t care less. They won’t help you if you are being discriminated against and willingly take part in defending the actions of racist managers and in selecting staff based on stereotypes. There should be an audit of the habitual practices of discrimination at IFPRI and they should not be allowed to access US government funding, which prohibits the use of race as a determinant in hiring, firing, or promotion. IFPRI has shown to be incapable of separating race, national origin, and gender from qualifications, capacities, and performance. I suggest prospective employees steer clear.

Pros

Collaborative envt, very international crowd esp among research assistance staff, pay just ok for dc

Cons

Hard to advance without a PhD, learning opportunities really depend on project and on supervisor - not standardized even within divisions
