Pros

GTECH can be a fun place to work, if you are on the product development, deployment side of the house, it is fast paced, exciting, and cutting edge. If you enjoy travel, technology, fast paced environment this is the place for you.

On the operational side of the house it can be challenging to effect change for the better. This is the gaming industry and excitement should be par for the course.

Cons

Teamwork and interdepartment relations can be challenging. Technical change internally can be challenging, which surprises a technologist.

Advice to Management

Get to know more of his people. Challenge all his Directors and Managers to ensure that their people are taken care, financially, technically for their position, knowledge sharing and gaining, and challenge all departments to begin finding ways to share and streamline processes. All departments create knowledge, and no department is willing to identify commonalities in knowledge creation and sharing.

    Pros

New hires begin with 3 weeks of paid time per year.
    Work schedules are generally flexible.
Requests for vacation time are rarely denied.
On site fitness center (gym) with good assortment of equipment.

    Cons

The company now mandates that 1 of the 3 weeks of paid time off given per year is used during an office closure between Christmas and New Year's.
Medical benefits are decent, but outrageously expensive, nearly $100 per person every two weeks.
Bonuses have been essentially reduced pennies on the dollar.
Management does not promote from within.
Management will perform large scale reduction in force layoffs with zero notice to employees.
There has been an significant uptick in outsourcing development and testing; most new positions with the company are in China.
Heavy investment on upper and middle management, no domestic investment in engineering staff.

    Advice to Management

Cuts in personnel cannot be seen as the sole way to growth in bottom line profit.
Most of middle management is filled with bad managers that do not hold their staff accountable for performance related issues.
Management is nearly always safe when reductions in force occur, which is pathetic, since most managers need to be culled from the herd.

    Pros

Pay and hours (high and low). You don't have to do a lot to get by -- for some that may be a good thing, but for me that was frustrating.

    Cons

While there may be a big picture plan, you wouldn't know it by the initiatives that are place nor the management team that is being assembled (and reassembled).

Lack of discipline and unstructured thinking about their opportunities and challenges is a real problem.

    Advice to Management

Take a good hard look at the management team -- does this team really represent the best and the brightest? The company has pretty lofty ambitions, but doens't seem to understand that at some level a plan, that the organization agrees to follow, will come in pretty handy.
