Pros

The pay is very fair, the staff is fairly competent. The location is great since Idaho Falls is a growing community that has the benefits of a larger city (great shopping, reasonable airport, good restaurants, public involvement) but has a small town appeal (good schools, low taxes, not much traffic).

Cons

Internal resources are divided by the "who you know" principle rather than based upon merit or need. The management at the top level is disconnected from the staff. The management at the lower level is fairly stagnant and rarely changes (fortunately they stay out of the way for the most part though).

Advice to Management

Listen to your employees.

    Pros

Overall it is a good place to work. Right now, we have an active and engaged lab director who seems to really value employees. Depending on where you work, managers are great and supportive.

The work itself is interesting and challenging, and often has impacts nationally.

    Cons

For the most part, the environment is male-dominated, and it can be difficult to navigate at times i.e., having to deal with sexist comments or automatically being considered an admin.

It is very bureaucratic. There are so many hoops to jump through, and often work is silo-ed. If organizations within INL could streamline efforts, I think it could continue to make the INL more marketable to customers.
