I have been working at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Nice people - Convenient location - Free parking - Coffee barista - High salaries and good benefits - On-site Gym - Option to work from home when necessary - Free fruits - On-site daycare and clinic

    Cons

    - Nepotism; every other person is related to each other. - Upper Management lacks focus and there is no leadership. They run around like headless chickens puffing their chests and making horrible business decisions. - Toxic "highschool" work environment; lots of finger pointing, lack of ownership, lazy employees; all these make the good employees unmotivated and the company stagnates. - Lots of dishonesty and inefficiencies within the company. - Lack of communication and transparency within the teams and overall company as a whole. - Lots of "politics" involved when decision making or even the sharing of information. - Two-faced upper management that will smile to your face but say the worst things behind your back. Lots of manipulation from Upper Management for them to either get information out of you or setting people up to fail and pushing them out of the business or teams. - Very young team lacking experience but yet making the final calls without understanding the impacts. - Lack of career growth; you're stuck in your role for a few years doing the same thing, and when opportunities do show up there's a lot of politics involved so you may not get the promotion or move that you want. - Lots of smoke fog. Hockey tickets, free coffee, free lunches - they're hiding the real issues and pretending to be a "hip" and "forward" company "disrupting" and "leading" the business. - Lots of good people leaving on sick leave due to burnouts. High pressure environment but not the good kind of stimulating pressure.

    Advice to Management

    - Acknowledge the good work that your employees are doing; treat them like human beings, they're the ones working to make sure you get your bonus. Don't expect them to live and breathe BAT. - Give constant feedback instead of only during the annual performance reviews. - Stop with the "us" versus "them" mindset. This splits up the common goal of the company. - Communication. There is a lack of motivation within the company due to: 1) employees not understanding what they are working for; and 2) lack of sharing of information within the teams. Too much of hearing things through "word of mouth". If things are going bad don't pretend otherwise; your employees are doing the work so they know if you're lying or not. - Implement better career growth plans during the performance reviews. - Communicate internally when positions become available; stop communicating only after a role has been filled in, it doesn't give everyone the opportunity to apply to the role if they never knew it was available.

I have been working at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Fast paced. Constantly evolving challenges. Part of a global network that allows exposure to different markets, cultures and business realities. Potential for global careers. Good emphasis on learning and development. Good balance between empowerment and structure. Good talent recognition. Great team culture and leaders that drive and motivate the organization.

    Cons

Important to drive your own career and seek out opportunities. Self motivation and drive is key to succeed. Very fast paced - exciting for some, less for others.

    Advice to Management

Recent emphasis on focus has decreased the time spent on peripheral activities/projects and enabled the amplification of our efforts in the areas that matter most.
